Well . . . I did not get that much reading done this Sunday. I was up late on Saturday (sang a performance of the last two thirds of the Messiah — and then the conductor offered to buy the first round and so we all went out) and so on Sunday I was a very sleepy Christine. I went to go visit P. in the afternoon, which usually involves some good reading time on the train — but I fell asleep instead. And then we watched a movie.*
Not to say that I didn’t get any reading done. I’ve been reading through Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, and yesterday I finished off the last half of Sourcery. I believe it is the fifth in the series overall, and the third Rincewind book.
It was pretty good. It was funny, of course. And it wasn’t as unstoppable in its silliness as the first two Rincewind sagas. I’m glad of that. All of the Discworld books are silly to an extent, but I tend to prefer the more “serious” ones (such as those about Captain Vimes or Moist von Lipwig).
This book deals with the arrival of a “sourceror” in Ankh-Morpork — a “sourceror” being much more powerful as a wizard, as both a user and a source of magic. Needless to say, chaos ensures.
I’d give this one about a 3.75 of 5. It’s good, but Pratchett has written better. I don’t know if I would re-read this one, unlike most books in the series.
*As an aside, you must see Enchanted. It is side-splittingly funny.
I *heart* Enchanted. As does Micah. We split our sides.
I liked Sourcery better than the other wizarding books but….in my opinion wizards should be a tangental and amusing element of the Pratchett books, not the main focus. Witches are fine as a main focus, but wizards are just too random. I have a particular crush on Vimes.
I would concur regarding wizardry. It just gets to be too much, sometimes.
As far as literary crushes go, I am particularly fond of Ventinari, Vimes, and Death. Probably in that order.
That’s the trouble with trying to read on Sunday – Saturday night always seems to take its toll. The Discworld series looks interesting, but I have a hard time getting past that Great Turtle and those elephants!
The turtle/elephant thing doesn’t come into play so very much after the first couple of books. If you’d like to start in the middle (and you certainly can: the books all stand alone very well, and I’m reading them all out of order) you might want to try one of these:
The Truth
Night Watch
Going Postal
Thank you for such a warm welcome to Sunday Salon. I had never heard of Pratchett (for shame) until I began wandering the blogosphere, but I am thinking I should rectify that soon.
I will be checking back from time to time, as I really like what I have read so far…bery nice blog! And I definitely be looking out for you next Sunday – thanks again for such a nice hullo.
